God Is Most Great! – Why?

Just what is it about God that is so great, so significant, so wonderful? This comes from a joint Muslim-Christian event we did together; a summary of seven things about God’s eternal greatness to turn into prayer.  (Maybe one for each day next week…?)

• We worship and love You God, because there is none like You!: unique in Your eternal majesty, infinite in Your unimaginable glory; Your thoughts far above any of our thoughts, Your words far above any of our words; King of Kings, Creator of every galaxy, Lord of all worlds, wonderful beyond all we can say…!

• We worship and love You God for Your greatness: in that, astonishingly, You reveal Yourself as `Our Father`; in Your amazing lovingkindness You wish each one of us to know You, to have a lifelong, ever-deepening loving relationship with You as our endlessly caring parent…

• We worship and love You God for Your greatness: greatness revealed in Your glorious, perfect character; for the glory, endlessly loving, endlessly wise, that’s embodied in everything You Jesus did on earth, and in everything You said!

• We worship and love You God for Your greatness: greatness revealed in Your total justice and yet amazing love for each of us; revealed above all in You rescuing us through the cross; that You Yourself, Jesus, took my place, paid the huge penalty of eternal death (hell) for all my sins, all my wrongdoings… (Can there really be a God who loves me like that? Yes!)

• We worship and love You God for Your greatness: greatness revealed in how Your glorious resurrection demonstrated Your complete, triumphant power over death, and over hell, and over all evil!

• We worship and love You God for Your greatness: greatness revealed in Your astonishing generosity in sharing Your Holy Spirit, Your very self, with us, with everyone – even failing sinners who will grieve You greatly – but with anyone at all who has reached out for Your forgiveness, and who asks…

• We worship and love You God for Your greatness: greatness revealed in Your future victory, Jesus’ return, putting everything right; and in the astounding certainty of You sharing all Your infinite joy and glory with any of us who gives themselves to You, putting our trust in the forgiveness You bought at the cross… Hallelujah!

(PS Like I said, we produced an earlier version of this for one of our memorable joint events here with Muslim friends, where a speaker on both sides spoke on `God is most great: Why?` (Allahu akbar, as our Muslim friends say, and as Arabic-speaking Christians would have said likewise in the centuries before Mohammed.)  It was a terrific evening.  And it struck me so strongly how the self-revelation of our God in the Bible, supremely serious, supremely joyous, supremely wonderful, is so very rich, so multifold, compared to any alternative….. May He be forever praised…!)
